Fun Ways to Teach Children That They Won’t Suspect

As parents, we are always looking for fun ways to teach children the things they need to learn. From the time they start to walk and become more independent, there is so very much they need to know. It is our job to teach them so many things, but it isn’t always easy to know exactly how to teach them. Simply repeating things isn’t going to cut it–they’ll just begin to tune us out as much as we do when they beg for something after we’ve said no. The key is to find ways of teaching them things without them knowing that’s what we are doing.

So how do we do that, you ask?

There are many ways to incorporate learning into our daily activities and make it seem like fun to our kids. With toddlers, simply adding extra descriptive words when speaking to them can teach them all sorts of things. Instead of asking them to put their socks back on, try asking them to put their blue socks back on. Or perhaps you could talk about what you see out the window, including the green trees and the purple flowers. Your children will learn their colors without having a clue that you were teaching them all that time!

So toddlers are easy to teach, but what about when a child gets a bit older? Any of you that have older children know as well as I do that the last person most children want to learn from is their parents. I’m not sure why that is, but it does seem to be instinctual since just about every child is like that. As parents, we just need to get a little more clever with our fun ways to teach children so they don’t begin to suspect that they are actually learning something!

As you might imagine, a parent must get quite creative with older children. Luckily, there are many fun activities that you can do with your children in which they’ll learn as you two enjoy spending time with each other. Cooking is one of the activities that can be great fun for the both of you. Think about it. While cooking, you will be following directions from the recipe, learning math concepts with the measuring and can even explore scientific principles such as what causes the cake to rise or how long it takes liquids to boil.

I’m sure that with a little thought you can come up with all sorts of activities that you can do with your child. Just look for the teachable moments along the way, and you will come up with many fun ways to teach children and they’ll never even realize what is going on.
